TRAINING

Sheriff Farris is committed to training deputies in the most innovative and effective ways to fight crimes, conduct investigations, and to exemplify professionalism at all times.

All sworn deputies of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office must complete the academy and field training program before receiving a badge, gun and uniform. As a sworn deputy of our department, you can count on receiving extensive training.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office training program, coordinated by our Training Director Lt. Rick Baker, is based on the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) guidelines. This program includes thousands of hours of training in all aspects of law enforcement. The majority of our training is classroom based, supplemented by practical exercises and scenarios.

Training is critical to the advancement of the department. Through proper training, we can increase safety, decrease the number of potential lawsuits, and raise the level of professionalism in the department. This translates directly into higher morale and greater effectiveness on the part of our work force.

In addition to the POST guidelines, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has recently embarked upon the TLEA Accreditation process which will place additional demands upon the training of our deputies as we seek to provide the highest quality of professional services to the community.
